Yushi Huang (雨师篁, Yǔshī Huáng), also known as Lord Rain Master (雨师娘娘, Yǔ Shī Niáng Niang), is one of the Elemental Masters in charge of rain and agriculture. She is also known as one of the Four Famous Tales, "The Princess Who Slit Her Throat".

Appearance[]

Yushi Huang is a woman with clear eyes and a calm, quiet expression.[1] She wears verdant robes and has a scar across her neck that she acquired after slitting her throat with a sword. It causes her to speak slower than others, but her voice is still serene and tranquil.[2]

She usually carries her sacred sword, Yulong,[1] but also possesses the Rain Master Hat, a spiritual device that can collect and move rain.[3] Yushi Huang is usually accompanied by her tall, black ox that takes the place of her right-hand man.[3][1]

Personality[]

Yushi Huang is renowned to be a recluse and live isolated from the heavens, so much so that no one in the Heavenly Court knows of her interests.[3] She rarely appears and simply works on the fields deep within the mountains.[4]

Though she's not fond of meeting people, Yushi Huang is a compassionate soul as she knew Xie Lian's plight and agreed to lend her spiritual device to aid him in the time of need.[3] She is always willing and quick to help out, even if it means to go against authority.[5]

She bears no grudge against people she's had conflicts with, willing to save them without hesitation.[6] She even performed a passing service to Xuan Ji after she dispersed.[7]

Even though she doesn't have many acquaintances in the Heavenly Court, none who knows her spoke badly of her with the exception of Pei Ming.[4]

As a goddess, she forbade her followers from using their money for lavish worship. Because of that, her followers would use fresh fruits and vegetables as an offering. She also disliked letting food go to waste so even those would be retaken after a few days by the followers to be eaten.[8]

History[]

Early Life[]

During her life, she was the sixteenth princess of the Kingdom of Yushi. Despite being of Royal Descent from the Royal Family of Yushi, Yushi Huang lacked the high status that came with this position. This was due to her mother being a palace servant. In combination with her awkward and introverted personality type, these factors did little to help her gain status within the court. Each and every one of her fifteen older siblings alongside those that were younger than her, were all favoured higher than her [9].

According to the historical customs of the Kingdom of Yushi, each ruler had to select a descendant to cultivate and pray for prosperity at the Temple of Yulong. This position despite the grandeur, was often pushed around amongst the royals due to the ascetic nature of the cultivation style. Those unlucky enough to find themselves offered the position would go to extreme lengths to avoid the task, such as paying an impressive fortune to find a substitute. However this was not the case in Yushi Huang's generation. No selection process was needed as Yushi Huang was pushed into the position from the get go [9].

For the rest of her early life, Lord Rain Master spent her days cultivating in the Temple of Yulong in mostly ascetic peace. That was until one day a few distinguished guests from Xuli came to visit during the national banquet of the Kingdom of Yushi. These guests were led around the Palace, finally visiting the royal cultivation hall. During this time, Yushi Huang was cleaning the tiles on the roof of the temple. At some point someone had taken away the ladder, leading to her becoming stuck on the roof after she had finished her task. The royals and the guests watching this from below found it amusing, watching someone wander around aimlessly stuck on the roof. Even the princes and princesses of Yushi amongst them couldn't help snickering at their siblings' situation [9].

It was a General from Xuli that eventually helped her, after chuckling at the situation as well. He leapt up from the ground and helped her down to the ground [9].

Xuli - Yushi War[]

In her time, Yushi and the kingdom of Xuli had maintained a false peace, until Xuli made up an excuse to invade. Their troops, led by Pei Ming, pushed all the way to the palace gates. Pei Ming, under Rong Guang's advice, disguised hundreds of Yushi criminals who were awaiting execution as normal civilians and dragged them before the palace gates. Then, he told the then king that if he would come out himself, kowtow three times as "penance for oppressing the people" and then kill himself as atonement, he would let the "civilians" free. If he should refuse, Pei Ming would chop off the civilians' heads.[2]

He gave the royalties three days, and each day they stalled, another group would be executed. After the three days, the troops would invade and kill the royals, before attending to the rest of the civilians. Yushi Huang convinced the old king to pass on the throne to her, before coming out herself the next day, kowtowing three times, and slitting her throat with the sacred guardian sword of Yushi, Yulong.[2]

Pei Ming then had no choice but to respect his promise, and leave the people of Yushi, at least temporarily, alone. Just as she took her last breath, Yushi Huang ascended as the current Rain Master.[2]

Xianle Civil War[]

While the Palace of Rain Master was being contructed, she went to reside in a humble cottage in what was once the Kingdom of Yushi. During that time, the Xianle kingdom experienced a devastating drought, so Xie Lian visited her land to ask for aid. She could not meet him in person since she was still recovering from her neck injury, but she knew of his predicament beforehand and asked her black ox to give him the Rain Master Hat in her stead.[3]

Rain Master Huang[]

Yushi Huang ended up never moving into her palace, remaining in the rural region of Yushi Country.

After Xie Lian's mission in Banyue Kingdom, Shi Qingxuan sends Ban Yue to Yushi Huang's territory to protect her from being stolen by Pei Ming.[4] Yushi Huang also meets Pei Xiu soon after while he is in exile. After Pei Xiu had knocked down Qi Rong's lair a few times out of boredom, Qi Rong sent his little squires to kill him. She happens to pass by during the assault and helps him out.[10]

After discovering his identity, she takes him back to Yushi so he can recover from his heavy injuries.[10]

Tonglu Mountain[]

Hearing that ghosts have passed through Yushi Country and taken several farmers as rations to Tonglu Mountain, Yushi Huang pursues them with her ox, Pei Xiu and Ban Yue. Although they are together at first, Pei Xiu and Ban Yue split up from the group after hearing Xie Lian's calls.[10]

Abilities[]

  • Heavenly Official: As a Heavenly Official, she doesn't age and has no need for basic necessities like food or sleep. Other traits include immunity to temperature and being able to handle heavy injuries. Like all other gods, she can also utilize spiritual powers.
  • Combat Skills: Yushi Huang has formidable fighting skills and instincts in combat. She is quick to think of a way to distract enemies,[11] save others[6] or slay opponents on her own.[12]

Weapons[]

  • Yulong: Yulong is the sacred sword of Yushi that was passed down for generations. After forging it into a spiritual device, she can now paralyze and command the people who were born in Yushi with it.[2]
  • Rain Master Hat: A spiritual device in the form of a bamboo hat. It possesses the power to collect and move the rain, but it does not have the ability to create it.[3]

Trivia[]

  • She got last place in the Battle of the Lanterns with 1 lantern, gifted from her black ox.[8]
  • Yushi Huang and her black ox, Hei Niu, can go even against Ling Wen in her male form and the Brocade Immortal who had absorbed over a thousand nefarious creatures [13].
