Xuan Ji (宣姬, Xuān Jī) is a powerful female ghost of Wrath rank and a former lover of Pei Ming. In life she was a distinguished General from the Kingdom of Yushi, with many suitors. After dying she became a ghost known for her deep-rooted obsession with General Ming Guang.

Appearance[]

Xuan Ji is an extremely beautiful, alluring woman with a handsome oval face and arched eyebrows. It is said that her beauty is laced with that of heroism. She has long dishevelled black hair draping over her face and long sharp nails which she uses as a weapon, like when she ripped out a young lord's skull from his scalp during the fight on Yu Jun Mountain. She's dressed in red bridal robes that are ragged and threadbare below the knees. Upon the ground, her dress spreads out like that of a giant blood red flower[1].

At first glance she is rather short but this is not due to her natural posture. Instead this is a result of her broken legs. Below the knee both leg bones have been broken, resulting in her kneeling on the ground and walking on her knees. Hence why there is an odd thump thump sound where ever she walks, as she is dragging her legs behind her [2].

Personality[]

Xuan Ji has an extremely hysterical and fierce personality.[2] She is obsessed with Pei Ming and has become so delusional that she killed innocent brides because she was jealous that they got to happily marry, whilst she was ignored. She's very vicious and cold-blooded, killing people brutally and without hesitation,[1] yet she was often unaware of what was actually happening around her as she could only think about Pei Ming. However, when her focus is shifted to anything else, she is noted to be considerably more cool-headed and intelligent.

History[]

War with Xuli[]

Xuan Ji was a noble woman born to a family of generals. Later in life, she herself became the general of the Yushi Kingdom. During the war between Yushi and Xuli, she met Pei Ming, with whom she crossed blades on the battlefield. After being defeated in the end, Xuan Ji became a captive in one of Xuli's camps. She decided to commit suicide on the spot, but before she could fulfill the act, her sword was broken by Pei Ming.[2]

Since Yushi had lost anyway and Pei Ming had a soft spot for women, he spared and released Xuan Ji which caused her to fall in love with him. At first, they agreed on a short-lived relationship, but she soon became adamant in being the only woman in his life for eternity. However, he did not return the sentiment.[2] After Pei Ming rejected her, Xuan Ji broke her own legs and committed suicide to make him feel remorse for her.

Ghost Bridegroom[]

After her death, Xuan Ji was too weak and powerless to cause trouble. However, with the help of Qi Rong, she haunted Yu Jun Mountain.[3] She kidnapped and killed young brides on the way to their wedding because she was under the delusion that the brides were marrying Pei Ming. Xie Lian is sent on the mission to capture the Ghost Bridegroom who turns out to be Xuan Ji, who is in fact a Ghost Bride.[2]

She targets Xiao-Pengtou after being discovered by Xie Lian. The reason being that he had groped her when she had posed as one of the brides.

After being arrested by Pei Xiu, she is detained in Feng Xin’s palace for questioning about Qi Rong’s whereabouts. Xuan Ji doesn’t gives in and keeps asking for Pei Ming.[3]

Tonglu Mountain[]

Xuan Ji reappears again alongside Qi Rong, Gu Zi, and the captured farmers.

After Xie Lian and company rescue the farmers she is recaptured again.

Aftermath of Tonglu Mountain[]

Towards the end of the novel, Yushi Huang wishes to visit Xuan Ji who had been kept in prison, only to discover that she had dissipated the day before.

After a conversation with Pei Ming, where he had told her to love herself, it seemed that she had reflected upon her life as a ghost and as a mortal before being able to let go of her obsession, dissipating in the process. This is because her strong obsession with the General was her reason for being unable to move on.

Trivia[]

  • Xuan Ji holds contempt for the Rain Master Yushi Huang, the last queen of the Yushi Kingdom, possibly because she considers her to be of inferior birth.
  • Due to her being a traitor of Yushi, she has to obey the commands from the Yulong sword.
  • According to Xuan Ji, Pei Ming prefers girls that smile. [2]
  • Ling Wen makes a joke that Xuan Ji is rather fortunate as Pei Ming during their relationship did not cheat on her and that that was the best that she should have hoped for with someone of his reputation. [2]
