Xiao-Ying (小萤, Xiǎo-Yíng) is a girl who lives in the region of Yu Jun Mountain. She takes care of Lang Ying and regurlarly brings him food.
Appearance[]
"Fu Yao yelled, "Too ugly!" [1]
Xiao-Ying is a small, petite girl with unattractive features. She has a crooked nose, as well as slanted eyes. Her face is flat, and she has an overall mediocre appearance.[1]
Personality[]
While Xiao-Ying is a timid and soft-spoken girl,[1] she is also courageous. Despite being harassed and assaulted by multiple men, she continuously tried to advise and warn them.[2] She also defended Lang Ying and shows no hesitation in trying to protect others, even though she is aware of her lack of strength.[3]
She is kind and helpful, as she willingly looks after Lang Ying and helps Xie Lian disguise himself as a bride.[2]
History[]
Xiao-Ying has always lived in the Yu Jun Mountain region.
Xie Lian, Nan Feng and Fu Yao first see Xiao-Ying in the Nan Yang Temple that they visit together, although she cannot see them. She prays to Feng Xin for protection of the region and that the ghost bridegroom will be captured soon so that more people will not suffer. Xie Lian and the other two notice that she has a big hole in her skirt to which she is oblivious.[1]
Xie Lian tries to pass her his robe, but since she cannot see who gave it to her, she places it at the base of the statue. Xie Lian makes himself visible and follows her, trying to give her the robe again, but she slaps him in fear. Xie Lian tells her about the hole, and she quickly runs away with his robe.[1]
The next day, a group of men is planning to go to Yu Jun Mountain directly to try and catch the ghost bridegroom. Xiao-Ying steps in and tells them it is too dangerous to go. Their leader Xiao-Pengtou shoves and insults her, but she still tries to convince them that it is too risky. Xie Lian intervenes and pushes the leader to the ground. He invites Xiao-Ying to tea, but she walks away on her own.[2]
At night, Xiao-Ying shows up at the Nan Yang temple again, where she meets Xie Lian like she hoped. She hands him back his robe and helps him disguise as a bride by fixing the wedding dress and doing his make-up.[2]
She secretly follows the group up the mountains, worried about them mistaking Lang Ying for the ghost bridegroom.[4] Because no one noticed her, Xiao-Pengtou accuses her of possibly being the ghost bridegroom herself which she immediately denies.[3]
Xiao-Ying later tries to stop the men from groping one of the brides inside the temple, but gets shoved away. Suddenly, a rock gets thrown at the leader's head. Xiao-Ying pretends she threw it in an attempt to protect Lang Ying from pursuit, but he gets spotted and caught anyway.
She runs up to Lang Ying after he's caught, denying that he's the ghost bridegroom. She explains that he's homeless, living in the mountains and only coming down sometimes to steal food. Once he ended up at her house and she treated his injuries and now gives him food sometimes.
Xie Lian realizes Lang Ying is innocent and asks Xiao-Ying questions about the Yu Jun Mountain. She says every time the people tried to build a Ming Guang temple, it would get burnt down. So they settled down with Nan Yang temples. This helps Xie Lian to form his conclusion that Xuan Ji is the jealous ghost bridegroom.
When she started to attack, Xiao-Ying along with others were inside the protection circle made by Ruoye. Xiao-Pengtou tried taking Lang Ying away for the bounty but Xiao-Ying clings onto his leg to stop him from moving. Xiao-Pengtou dies at the hands of Xuan Ji.
Xiao-Ying sees Xie Lian being strangled by the ghost, thus she thought she could help by hitting her with a branch. However the attempt is futile since she gets flung meters away. Xiao-Ying dies from blood loss, however she passes away reassured when Xie Lian said he can take care of Lang Ying.[5]
Relationships[]
Lang Ying[]
Xiao-Ying often took care of him by giving him food or fixing his bandages.[3] She was also the only one who defended Lang Ying from the claims of being the ghost bridegroom. When she passes away, she dies reassured that he will be under Xie Lian’s care.
