Tian Sheng (天生, Tiān Shēng) is a young merchant that was part of the group traveling through Banyue Pass.
Appearance[]
Tian Sheng is said to look around seventeen to eighteen years old with big eyes and thick eyebrows. He was born with a strong and dignified appearance.[1]
In the manhua, he has dark hair tied up into a half ponytail. He wears beige and white robes, along with hoop earrings. His facial features described in the novel are discernible in his design, and he has faint freckles as well.
Personality[]
He's an enthusiastic and kind young man. He tends to be loud and direct, but respects his elders and lowers his voice when told to do so. He's quick to warm up to people, considering others to be familiar after exchanging a few words. Like many merchants and younger men, he's full of curiosity and often questions new information he receives.[1]
Tian Sheng values the lives of others and uses his courage to pursue the well-being of his peers. He's also quite smart, figuring out where to find the Shanyue Fern just by hearing Hua Cheng's story about it.[2]
History[]
Tian Sheng was part of the group of merchants that Xie Lian and the others met inside a cave in the Gobi Desert where they were taking shelter from the sandstorm. He conversed with them about the general's tombstone, quickly becoming the spokesperson of the caravan next to A-Zhao.[1]
He later followed Xie Lian along with three other men to the Banyue Palace when they went to search for the Shanyue Fern in order to save those who were stung by the Scorpion Snakes. At the palace, he witnessed the Human Fertilizer incident and was also brought up to the Sinner's Pit by Kemo and his fellow Banyue soldiers. After A-Zhao, he was chosen to be thrown down the pit, but Xie Lian offered himself for Tian Sheng instead.[3]
While Xie Lian and the others were inside the Sinner's Pit, Ban Yue took out the soldiers and led Tian Sheng and the other merchants down, directing them where to go. They went on their way, but still managed to pick up the Shanyue Fern and bury the dead merchant.[4]
Tian Sheng catches up to Xie Lian as he was about to leave. He has realized that Xie Lian is a god and promises to build a temple and worship him when he gets back home.[4]
It's hinted that Tian Sheng commissioned the play of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian that was later shown at the Mid-Autumn Festival. However, Xie Lian thinks a young boy like him shouldn't have been able to do something like that as Tian Sheng doesn't even know his name, so it remains a mystery.[5]
