Summary[]
Xie Lian becomes angry and breaks the table. He then incoherently accuses San Lang of doing awful things to him, but San-lang remains ignorant of what he’s talking about. Xie Lian wants to beat him to death, but for whatever reason his body defies him. Hearing the commotion, some of the teahouse workers run upstairs to settle them down. Xie Lian is stupefied to see that on the workers' hands there is also a red thread each tied to their finger. When Xie Lian questions them about the thread, San Lang tells him that tying red thread to one's finger is a custom in this area. He elaborates further and relays that the custom began with Hua Cheng, who tied a red thread on the hand of his beloved and himself. Xie Lian apologizes for misunderstanding him.
Xie Lian had dropped the gold leaf he had picked up earlier on the street. Turns out, it's San Lang's gold leaf. Xie Lian explains how the leaf fell into his possession and how his intentions had been to return it to its owner. He then apologizes for borrowing some of the money but San Lang isn't upset. He pays for the damages. Xie Lian is moved by the generous gesture.
Settling back down, San Lang inquires about what's distressing Xie Lian to help him. However, Xie Lian urges San Lang to drop the subject. Back to the topic of Hua Cheng, Xie Lian learns that it will be a few days before he can meet with him because he's busy. San Lang extends an offer to Xie Lian to reside at his house in the interim. Xie Lian agrees and, upon San Lang's prompt, also agrees to call him San Lang gege since he is older.
The first night at San Lang's elegant mansion, Xie Lian is unable to sleep well. He feels something is missing from his bed and however he positions himself, he cannot ease the hidden discomfort on his body. His slumber is marred by messy dreams with a voice that sometimes belongs to a man and sometimes to a youth. When he awakens, sweaty and frustrated, he finds a set of white clothes placed by his pillow. He takes the clothes to the bath, whereupon immersing himself in water he discovers a pretty, crystal clear ring hung on a silver chain around his neck.
Suddenly, Xie Lian detects a flash of silver by his side. Alerted, he strikes it out of the water and grabs a hold of it. He’s astonished to find it’s a sentient saber with a moving eye on the hilt. The eyeball rolls around wildly and the sword dives enthusiastically into his embrace. The metal chills him into giving out a surprised cry, he does not detect a killing intent and so he does not violently strike it away.
Just then, San Lang appears by the bathing pool and snatches the saber away. Xie Lian is quite in awe of San Lang’s weapon and praises his cultivation skills, this delights the saber. San Lang, however, reprimands his weapon and gives it a few smacks for its unruly behavior. Upset with the unfair treatment, the saber falls to floor and rolls around as if throwing a tantrum. The sight makes Xie Lian's heart ache, so he quickly stands up and asks San Lang not to hit it anymore. Realizing his state of undress, Xie Lian submerges back into the water, but San Lang had already turned around to leave.
Xie Lian changes into the new clothes and joins San Lang in the other room. He's seated and waiting for him with the saber obediently sheathed by his side. The day passes easily with the two conversing and discussing. However, at night, Xie Lian wakes up from the unruly dreams and he decides to take a walk to calm himself. Along the way he hears quiet voices from San Lang’s room. Peering through the crack between the doors, he observes a person dressed in black and wearing a ghost mask giving his report to San Lang. He wants a certain creature retrieved because it had swallowed something important, but that he himself could not chase down this creature since he was accompanying Xie Lian for the time being.
At the end, Xie Lian leaves a letter before going to capture the creature as a thanks to San Lang's generosity.
