Summary[]

Xie Lian awakens on the floor of an inn, confused and uncertain as to his whereabouts. The clothes on him are simple and crude while various parts of his body ache. Feng Xin and Mu Qing are also nowhere to be found. Investigating his body, he comes to the horrifying conclusion that he was abducted and his body was defiled. His cultivation path requires absolute chastity, and the fact that he no longer has magical power legitimizes his fears.

He leaves the inn, upset and unable to accept what’s happened. He becomes even more anxious and frustrated on the street and runs madly into a forest, where he lets out his anger by beating the trees. The Ground of the forest manifests and begs Xie Lian to stop hitting his trees while hugging his thighs. Xie Lian apologizes to this small god and tries to pay for the damages but is confused when the Ground hurriedly refuses, cowering and treating Xie Lian as if he was the senior.

When Xie Lian inquires about the whereabouts of his “two attendants”, Feng Xin and Mu Qing, the Ground rushes off and retrieves them. However the Feng Xin and Mu Qing that greet him seem different, more mature from the youths he knows.

Upon questioning Xie Lian, the two generals both conclude that Xie Lian has lost his memory of the last 800 years. They urge Xie Lian to go with them to see someone who could resolve this situation, but by this point Xie Lian is suspicious and evades them. The two generals give chase, but Xie Lian is much too fast and they lose him. They resolve to tell Hua Cheng of the situation first.

Meanwhile, Xie Lian, stopping when he’s lost his pursuers, is astounded by his own current physical capabilities. He’s also perplexed by Mu Qing’s display of spiritual powers that would have needed at least a few hundred years to cultivate. Recalling Mu Qing’s mention of a “Hua Cheng” before he had fled, he’s bewildered by the reaction in his heart upon hearing that unfamiliar name. He resolves to find this person first and walks towards the city.

He settles into a teahouse where a young maiden that was originally entertaining her audience with folk songs is bullied by some male patrons into singing erotic songs. Xie Lian is embarrassed to find that the song elicits odd, passionate images to surface in his mind. When the patrons become hands-y with the song-girl and show no intention of desisting their harassment when the girl asks them, Xie Lian is unable to bear it-especially given his own inner turmoil. He tosses the men downstairs, frightening them from countering, and returns to his tea while remaining vigilant on behalf of the girl.

From his seat he glimpses across the street, in another building, a tall man in red. The man smiles at Xie Lian and raises his cup to him, as if paying his respect. Xie Lian turns away, perturbed by his heart’s reaction to meeting the man's gaze. When he looks back across the street, the man is gone. However, while he was unaware, at some point the man in red had come and sat across from him at the table.
