Shi Wudu (师无渡, Shī Wúdù), also known as Water Master Wudu (水师无渡, Shuǐ Shī Wúdù), is one of the five Elemental Masters in the Heavenly Court and the older brother of Shi Qingxuan.[1]

He is also revered as the God of Wealth[2] and often worshipped alongside Shi Qingxuan. He is a member of the Three Tumors.[1]

Appearance[]

Shi Wudu is a man with a delicate and handsome face,[3] whose brows and eyes are said to look quite similar to his brother's, although his eyes clearly told he didn't care for anyone. He commonly dresses in white robes and always carries his Water Master Fan with him.[4]

Personality[]

Shi Wudu is a person with a great sense of pride,[5] as well as someone who is extremely stubborn and not to be picked on easily.[1] His title of "Water Tyrant" was earned due to him capsizing any ship that did not give him offerings.[6] He usually has a collected and composed demeanor, strict and quick to call out others on their behavior. With his extremely authoritative presence, others obey his words instantly.[7] Despite that, he's seen being more casual around his close friends, Ling Wen and Pei Ming.[2][8]

He is not easily shaken by danger or events taking place around him either, but he's extremely protective of his younger brother, which causes him to act reckless at times.[9]

Shi Wudu considers death better than experiencing or watching prolonged suffering and pain.[5]

History[]

Mortal Life[]

Shi Wudu was born to a prosperous merchant household. Shi Qingxuan was born when Shi Wudu was six years old. Shi Qingxuan was cursed by a Reverend of Empty Words and to confuse the monster who marked a newborn boy, he was raised as a girl.[10]

Their family's prosperity gradually dwindled until Shi Wudu's parents died when he was sixteen and the rest of the family fought for inheritance. Unable to stomach this infighting, Shi Wudu took his ten years old little brother and left to a mountain. Shi Wudu apprenticed under a cultivation master while Shi Qingxuan lived in the town on the foot of the mountain. Every day he would train until late and return home to eat deep in the night.[10]

One day, Shi Wudu forgot the time and trained later than usual. Worried for his elder brother, Shi Qingxuan went into the mountain with food, where he was ambushed by the Reverend of Empty Words after he took a piss, answered to his birth name and told the monster his real birthday. The two brothers lived under the terror of the Reverend for years afterward until Shi Wudu ascended as a Heavenly Official. He immediately took Shi Qingxuan to Middle Heaven and gave him many priceless treasures until Shi Qingxuan ascended as well and thus freed from the Reverend's curse.[10]

But in truth, Shi Wudu has artifically caused Shi Qingxuan to ascend using an underhanded mean. He found a mortal of the same name and birthday who incidentally was fated to ascend. This man, Scholar He, took the misfortune that was supposed to be Shi Qingxuan's and suffered to death after losing all of his family members in various gruesome manners. Meanwhile, Shi Qingxuan unwittingly usurped his luck and successfully ascended.[11][12]

Heavenly Official[]

Mid Autumn Festival Banquet[]

Although he had heard of him beforehand, Xie Lian first meets Shi Wudu at the Mid Autumn Festival. Shi Wudu sits together with Pei Ming and Ling Wen, watching the plays and conversing with each other. He pokes fun at Pei Ming's play of him and Ling Wen as a couple, but ends up having his own play shown in the second round, which depicts him and Shi Qingxuan as husband and wife. Shi Wudu is enraged and calls for the curtains to drop, ending the play.[2]

He wins third place in the Battle of the Lanterns, making him the most revered god right after Jun Wu.[7] After the festival, he visits mountain hot springs together with Pei Ming and Ling Wen.[13]

Fetus Spirit[]

Shi Wudu is present during the meeting regarding the identity of the fetus spirit's father. He's slightly surprised by the fact that Pei Ming isn't the perpetrator[14] and also teases Ling Wen after she got accused, offering to gift a red envelope for his "nephew".[15]

Third Heavenly Calamity[]

During his third Heavenly Calamity, Shi Wudu comes face to face with He Xuan, who had become a powerful ghost king.

He Xuan demands that Shi Wudu either switch Shi Qingxuan's fate with one of the miserable men in his domain and become mortal himself, or allow Shi Qingxuan to kill him with a rusty sword. Shi Qingxuan begs to be given a miserable fate, arguing that they have lived for hundreds of years already. Shi Wudu wants Shi Qingxuan to kill him, saying to find General Pei Ming and ask him to take care of him. Shi Wudu argues that he won't be able to stand being incapable of helping his younger brother. He also points out that he must have "at least a thousand" other enemies and Shi Wudu dying would keep him safe going forward as well.[5]

When it's clear that Shi Qingxuan can't go through with it, Shi Wudu strangles him, saying that he would prefer his brother die than watch him suffer. He Xuan stops this by ripping his arms off of Shi Qingxuan. Shi Wudu then goads He Xuan into decapitating him.[5]

Relationships[]

Shi Qingxuan[]

Shi Qingxuan is Shi Wudu's little brother, the two of them having grown up depending on each other.

Despite Shi Qingxuan's bravado-filled speech that he's not afraid of his brother, just one reprimand could make Shi Qingxuan back down.[2] Whenever he achieved something good, Shi Qingxuan would seek his brother's approval and praise first like a child looking for a reward.[7]

Shi Wudu's affection for Shi Qingxuan takes the form of fussing and scolding his little brother for any perceived misconduct, constantly reminding him to mind his manners and take better care of himself.[2][7] Oftentimes, Shi Wudu would tell him horror stories of various places and the consequences of a certain actions to prevent Shi Qingxuan from doing them, though it didn't stop Shi Qingxuan from excitedly exploring the Southern Mountain after being told it was full of savage cannibals.[16] Even though he is tough on his little brother, Shi Wudu never raised a hand against him.[16] In fact, he held Shi Qingxuan so dearly that he would sacrifice many things for him.

Pei Ming[]

Pei Ming is one of his closest friends. Both are part of the Three Tumors, sharing a bad reputation among the Heavenly Court but a good relationship with each other.[1] Shi Wudu seems to enjoy poking fun at people's misinterpretation of Pei Ming and Ling Wen's relationship. He also likes to make allusions to Pei Ming's promiscuous tendency, telling Shi Qingxuan to stay in male form just in case a man of ill intent like Pei Ming came across him in female form.[2] Despite the teasing, they are comfortable around each other and are seen to hang out often, even outside Heavenly Court business.[13][10]

He trusts Pei Ming enough to think he would take care of his younger brother in the event of his death, despite the fact that Shi Qingxuan and Pei Ming find each other irritating and that Shi Wudu had often told his brother that they only had each other to rely on.[5]

Ling Wen[]

Ling Wen is also a member of the Three Tumors and another one of his close friends.[1] He enjoys poking fun at people's misinterpretation of hers and Pei Ming's relationship.[2]

Abilities[]

  • Water Master Fan: A fan that has the character for "water" (水, Shuǐ) on the front side and three lines representing waves on the backside.[2] This spiritual device allows him to control the water. It has defensive functions too, such as summoning water arrows that form a protective circle.[5]
