Youth[]
Not much is known about his past. One day, when he was around ten years old, he picked a fight with some disciples. He repeatedly wanted to fight them, which confused but also provoked them. At one point Yin Yu, the eldest of the disciples, interfered with the affair and made them step back. He questioned Quan Yizhen about where he came from, but he only wanted to fight Yin Yu. After taking a look at Quan Yizhen, noticing that he was messy and dirty, he took him in and guided him as his new disciple.[1]
Quan Yizhen had trouble getting along with the other disciples, often getting into fights and causing a mess that Yin Yu had to clean up after. He often asked Yin Yu if he was annoying, worried that he was a burden to him.[1] Although Yin Yu did feel annoyed because of the chaos he caused, he never let Quan Yizhen know.[2]
When Yin Yu ascended, he promoted Quan Yizhen and Jian Yu as his deputy generals. During the Opening Ceremony of the Palace of Yin Yu, a crowd gathered outside the palace asking for revenge since Quan Yizhen had fought them earlier. That night, Quan Yizhen heard the conversation between Yin Yu and Jian Yu, who was angered by Quan Yizhen for disturbing the ceremony.
Quan Yizhen then confessed to Yin Yu that he didn't like the Heavenly Court and wanted to leave. Although Yin Yu understood, he wanted to stay as it was the result all his efforts.[2]
Ascension[]
When Quan Yizhen ascended, he was in charge of the West alongside Yin Yu. Soon after his ascension, he became more popular among the Heavenly Officials and the people, being part of the top ten at the Mid-Autumn Battle of Lanterns.[2] He himself admitted this had been achieved without much effort.[3]
The night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, he came to Yin Yu's palace to ask for his birthday gift. After a moment, Yin Yu came back with a present that was supposed to be the Golden Exorcism Armlet but was actually the Brocade Immortal. Proud of this new robe, Quan Yizhen wore it during a meeting with all the top-ranking martial gods of the Upper Court. He did not notice anything weird about it and thought that Jun Wu and Ling Wen complimented it. But Yin Yu asked him to give it back because there was a problem.[3]
However, when Quan Yizhen said he proposed to Jun Wu that Yin Yu should accompany him for the Patrol of Martial Gods, Yin Yu considered it as a humiliation and got angry. He gave him orders and Quan Yizhen had no choice but to execute them, because of the robe. The other heavenly officials understood that it had an aura of evil.[3]
Mount Tonglu's Reopening[]
Brocade Immortal[]
Quan Yizhen is assigned with Xie Lian to the retrieve the stolen Brocade Immortal, but he's not aware of that until later because he didn't attended the meeting organised by Jun Wu.
When he first arrives at Puqi Shrine, he stuffs gold bars into the donation box because he has too many. Later, he falls sick from Xie Lian's cooking and only after he recovers does he get told the actual mission: capture the Brocade Immortal and prevent it from reaching the Tonglu Mountain, where a ghost king is going to emerge soon.[4]
Xie Lian plans to look for information in the city, but Quan Yizhen doesn't still doesn't feel well. The next day, when he begins to feel a little better, someone knocks at the door.[5] It is a Half Maquillage Woman who wants to give them a new robe in exchange for old ones, but she her identity as a ghost is quickly discovered and she's sealed away.
The robe she had is possibly the Brocade Immortal, but Quan Yizhen denies that it's the real thing. He can easily say so considering his previous experience with that robe.[6]
After Ling Wen informs them of other ghosts bringing a Brocade Immortal, Xie Lian and Quan Yizhen, as well as Lang Ying, go to an abandoned textile house which is closer to the Puqi Shrine. Along the way, they meet ghosts carrying a step-litter. When they propose to help give them a ride, Quan Yizhen exclaims he wants to go into the step-litter but he is thrown onto the ground.[6]
