Family[]
Gu Zi[]
Gu Zi is the child of the man whose body Qi Rong possesses. Though he repeatedly says he only keeps the child to fatten him up and devour him later[1], it is eventually shown that Qi Rong starts to grow fond of Gu Zi, even trying to hide the fact that he still eats humans in order to avoid being nagged by him. Gu Zi always jumps in front of Qi Rong to protect 'his father' from any more beatings from officials.
Qi Rong's worry for the child is shown more significantly later when Gu Zi cries from the heat and pain of the flaming hall, causing him to become extremely nervous and uncertain of what to do.[2]
Xie Lian[]
Qi Rong has a strained relationship with his older cousin Xie Lian. Before Xie Lian’s first banishment, Qi Rong used to support him greatly and tried to gain his approval on multiple occasions. Qi Rong would do anything to get Xie Lian's attention and affection. He would also stand against everyone who wronged or made hateful comments towards Xie Lian. In the Heavenly Procession ceremony, Qi Rong cheered loudly for Xie Lian until his hands got sore.[3] He once asked the Queen of Xianle if he could get a carriage, because Qi Rong wanted to ride Xie Lian home whenever his studies were completed on Mount Taicang.[4]
After the fall of Xianle, he grew to despise Xie Lian. Qi Rong excessively curses and mocks him as well as his associates in the present. He also owned a kneeling statue of Xie Lian that he used to keep in his lair until Xie Lian destroyed it.
During the story, Xie Lian tries to set free the man Qi Rong is possessing. His attempts fail as he subjects Qi Rong to various forms of punishments. The latter grows to mistrust Xie Lian and therefore when Jun Wu sets up various traps for Xie Lian, Qi Rong accepts to cooperate with Jun Wu to Xie Lian's disadvantage. [5]
Qi Rong ends up in heaven by the end of the story as a prisoner, when Jun Wu sets the Heavenly Capital on fire, Xie Lian tries to persuade Qi Rong to go back to Earth with Gu Zi and save himself. However, after a long term period of torment, Qi Rong no longer trusts Xie Lian and accuses the latter of having murderous intentions towards himself. Therefore, he is burnt by Jun Wu in the Heavenly Capital along with the body Qi Rong possessed. There is no reconciliation between them, as Qi Rong accuses Xie Lian of looking down on him since the early days they lived in the Kingdom of Xianle. [6]
Queen of Xianle[]
The Queen of Xianle is the older sister of his mother and thus, his aunt. She took care of him after his mother had passed away, raising him with affection and tolerance, so much so that it spoiled him. Qi Rong had been lying on the lap of the queen munching on grapes, and spat ou the skins in a rush. She would fulfill his wishes and be incredibly moderate in the punishments he received for his malicious behavior.[7] She made attempts to educate him, but Qi Rong continued to act with disrespect towards others.[8]
King of Xianle[]
The King of Xianle was Qi Rong's uncle. He was concerned when Qi Rong's arm was broken by Feng Xin due to his royal blood line.[7]
Heavenly Officials[]
Lang Qianqiu[]
Qi Rong and Lang Qianqiu have a relationship of enmity. Qi Rong plots with Prince An Le to assassinate the royal family of Yong An only to be stopped by Xie Lian, once the truth is revealed Lang Qianqiu makes it his mission to avenge his family by boiling Qi Rong into his cauldron. Afterwards, Lang Qianqiu starts looking for his ashes. [9]
Lang Qianqiu holds Qi Rong's soul after his burial at the hands of Jun Wu and watches him vanish. When Gu Zi starts crying for Qi Rong he gathers the particles left from his soul and puts them in a lamp. [10]
Mu Qing[]
Before Xianle's downfall, Qi Rong thought Mu Qing was only a lowly servant. When Qi Rong was a kid, he snatched a small jaded cup of tea and swung it at Mu Qing only to be stopped by Xie Lian.[11]
Feng Xin[]
In their youth, Qi Rong and Feng Xin had a strained relationship, both sharing mutual dislike for one another. As Qi Rong was of higher status than Feng Xin, he looked down upon the latter and was appalled when Feng Xin touched and hurt him, even when it was under Xie Lian's order.[11] Feng Xin detested Qi Rong in return, though he usually kept quiet around him due to their difference in status.[12][4]
Though Qi Rong despises Feng Xin along with Mu Qing, he acknowledges that they are competent to save Xie Lian.[13]
Even now Qi Rong mocks him, though Feng Xin usually doesn't react to the provocations.[14][15]
Jun Wu[]
Qi Rong is cautious in front of Jun Wu, but he secretly curses him behind his back.
Ghosts[]
Hua Cheng[]
Though he is afraid of Hua Cheng, he is thick-skinned and still cusses in front of him.
