Childhood[]
Qi Rong was born to the younger sister of the Queen of Xianle, making him the maternal cousin of Xie Lian. His father was from Yong'an.[1] His mother eloped with a bodyguard in the palace after breaking off a good engagement. Although the bodyguard seemed sweet at first, after only half a year he revealed his true violent and drunken nature. She was put into a doghouse-like shack and gave birth to Qi Rong at one point, which resulted in the father becoming even more abusive towards them.[2]
When Qi Rong turned five, his mother ran away with him. She was deemed a royal scandal, so she ended up locking herself away and never going outside. She fell into a deep depression, but still loved and cared for Qi Rong deeply.[2]
When he and his mother first returned to the palace, everyone in the royal capital did know what happened to that mother and son. For that reason, many sons of nobles purposely left Qi Rong alone, not playing with or talking to him. On the other hand, he watched Xie Lian being admired the most, and he used to silently envy him until one day Qi Rong wanted to write words for his mother on a lantern, so he asked other kids on how to do so. But those kids tricked him, pushing him to write: "Pray My Mother and I Pass Away to the Heavens". Discovering this trick, Xie Lian broke the lantern with fury and rewrote a new one. No one dared to mess with him ever again. From then Qi Rong's Envy had changed into respect, admiration and obsession for Xie Lian and became his tail.[3]
His mother lost her life saving the queen during an upheaval, and asked her sister to take care of Qi Rong before she passed. From then on the queen raised Qi Rong.[2]
