Mountain-Locked Ancient Temple, Forest of Hanging Corpses (山锁古庙倒挂尸林, Shān Suǒ Gǔ Miào Dàoguà Shī Lín) is the 9th chapter of the Heaven Official's Blessing novel.
Summary[]
Fu Yao notices Xiao-Ying and asks why she is on the mountain, too. She explains that she secretly followed the group, which leads their leader to believe that she may be the ghost bridegroom in disguise. Xiao-Ying denies this, approaching Xie Lian as they just met to dress him as a bride.
The group observes the Ming Guang temple and Xie Lian begins to question why there are Nan Yang temples on the mountain even though they're in the north, Pei Ming's territory. As the two gods are almost equal and thus it's not a matter of popularity, so there must be another reason as to why there are no more Ming Guang temples.
Suddenly they realize that the group went inside the temple. They spot the dead brides and get ready to bring them down the mountain to claim their rewards. Xie Lian and Xiao-Ying try to stop them, but are unable to do so. The group discovers an especially beautiful bride as they're taking off the veils and their leader begins to grope her. Xiao-Ying again tries to intervene, but gets shoved away. The leader gets hit by a stone and they see a shadow run away into the forest.
Xie Lian runs after it, but stops in front of the forest as he smells blood. The others run into the forest anyway, but soon come back drenched in blood. Corpses have been hung up on trees, their blood dripping. Fu Yao confirms this is Qi Rong's doing. Xie Lian explains the encounter he had with the person who led him through the forest and when he mentions the silver butterflies, Fu Yao and Nan Feng become unsettled.
Suddenly two men bring the one they chased after, a bandaged teenager, out of the forest. They think he's the ghost bridegroom, but Xiao-Ying denies that. As their leader tries to hurt her again, Xie Lian and Nan Feng knock him out. She explains the teenager's situation and that she takes care of him, so she knows that he didn't abduct the brides.
Xie Lian then asks her about the Ming Guang temples and she explains that whenever one was built, it would suddenly catch on fire. After a moment of thinking about everything, Xie Lian suddenly realizes that the ghost bridegroom must have hidden themselves among the dead brides.
