You've already come through after so much, what's there left to worry about? Men or women, it doesn't matter, as long as you yourself are happy.
— Mei Nianqing

Mei Nianqing (梅念卿, Méi Niànqīng) was the head priest of Xianle and Xie Lian's mentor.

He is a famed fortune teller, and he can predict fates accurately. Although he doesn't have martial skills, he has been said to be quite talented and powerful in cultivation and spells. [1] [2]

Appearance[]

Little is told about his appearance, but he disguised himself to look older when he came to Xianle kingdom to teach Xie Lian. During his stay in the Xianle Kingdom, he is said to be a young man in his early thirties. [3]

When he appears again in the Royal Capital, he is noted by Xie Lian to look around twenty-five or twenty-six.[4]

He is always dressed in robes that cover his neck. [5]

Personality[]

He loves playing cards with a feverish passion that is unchanging even after 800 years.

Despite the fact that he seems to be a calm person, Xie Lian often stresses him out.

He's a blunt and honest person, and he will often say what he thinks without sugarcoating it. Despite his bluntness, he is caring towards people that are dear to him, as he stood up for Xie Lian when other Heavenly Officials were insulting him [6], and wished for Jun Wu to be free of his burden.[7]

He misses Wuyong's glory days where him, Jun Wu, and their friends were together.

He is righteous and worked hard to stop the atrocities caused by Jun Wu.

History[]

Mei Nianqing is the only surviving vassal of the Crown Prince of Wuyong, as the prince cast the other three vassals into Tonglu Mountain when they challenged his decision to sacrifice humans in order to appease the volcano.

Mei Nianqing and his three friends were once Crown Prince of Wuyong's vassals, and accompanied him with his affairs. After the fall of Wuyong, only he remained with the Prince. However, after discovering the murder of his friends he barely escaped being killed by him and ran away.

He created three look-alike empty shells of his friends to keep himself company and wandered around aimlessly for centuries after leaving Jun Wu's side, until one day he heard of another prince born under the ominous star. Then he went to became the Guoshi of Xianle.

As the Guoshi of Xianle he taught the Crown Prince of Xianle. He tried to help Xie Lian avoid the fate of Crown Prince of Wuyong and warned him many times to no avail. After the fall of Xianle Kingdom, he confronted Jun Wu about his actions.

Later, he painted murals depicting the story of Crown Prince of Wuyong in various temples across Tonglu Mountain. After Xie Lian ascended for the third time, he was caught and brought to the Heavenly Capital under suspicion of working together with White No-Face, however he exposed the real identity of White No-Face once he arrived.

He's currently living in a small house located in the forests of Tonglu Mountain as a sort of company to Jun Wu, who is suppressed underneath.[8]

Relationships[]

Jun Wu[]

He was once one of his vassals in Jun Wu's time as the Crown Prince of Wuyong Kingdom, and they used to be close friends. He feels great guilt over leaving him after the fall of Wuyong, however he doesn't approve of Jun Wu's current actions.

He is overall quite fond of Jun Wu, and misses him. He sometimes refers to him as "My dear Highness".

Despite Jun Wu's homicidal tendencies, and despite Mei Nianqing working to bring him down, Jun Wu hasn't killed nor tortured him, much to Xie Lian's surprise. Jun Wu cares for him despite everything that has happened between them.

Mei Nianqing is the person who understands and knows Jun Wu the best. [9]

After Jun Wu's defeat, he stayed with him to accompany him.

Xie Lian[]

He is proud and fond of his disciple, and often tries to shield him from Jun Wu. He advises Xie Lian to help him, although Xie Lian often doesn't listen to him and does whatever he himself decides instead.

He often worries about Xie Lian being 'fooled' by Hua Cheng, afraid that Hua Cheng would lead Xie Lian astray. Though it doesn't matter to him whether Xie Lian loves a woman or a man, he cannot accept the fact that the Crown Prince had to choose a Supreme.

Hua Cheng[]

He seems to be one of the few people who aren't afraid of him. Indeed, he easily becomes annoyed because of him, especially when it comes to Hua Cheng's sarcastic smirk. He even tries to lecture him several times. Surprisingly, and because of his relationship with Xie Lian, Hua Cheng seems to be worried about what Mei Nianqing thinks about him and even listens to his reprimands.

Knowing the relationship he has with Xie Lian, he seems to accept him, even though he doesn't trust him a lot.

Mu Qing[]

Mei Nianqing has always disliked Mu Qing. He never wanted to take him as a disciple, argued that Xie Lian was more skilled than him and was quick to accuse him of sabotaging the Heavenly Procession.[10] Despite Mei Nianqing's dislike towards him, Mu Qing still acts respectful and obedient towards him.[11][10]

Trivia[]

  • His name can also mean "miss you"
  • He called Hua Cheng's writing 'extremely hideous' and stated that "not‌ ‌even‌ ‌the‌ ‌best‌ ‌teachers‌ ‌can‌ ‌salvage‌ ‌it".[12] Xie Lian tried to defend the set‌ ‌of‌ ‌verses‌ ‌on‌ ‌the‌ ‌doors‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌Gambler’s‌ ‌Den‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌Ghost‌ ‌City which led to make him think that Xie Lian's taste has fallen apart.
  • He was extremely vexed and creeped out after discovering that Hua Cheng was the child Xie Lian saved 800 years ago. "EIGHT‌ ‌HUNDRED‌ ‌YEARS!‌ ‌He’s‌ ‌been‌ ‌stalking‌ ‌you‌ ‌for‌ ‌eight‌ ‌hundred‌ ‌years!‌ ‌Scary,‌ ‌too‌ ‌scary!‌"[13]
