Jian Yu (鉴玉, Jiàn Yù) was a Heavenly Official of the Middle Court in the Palace of Yin Yu. He was a disciple brother of Yin Yu and Quan Yizhen.

Appearance[]

Jian Yu is a handsome young man around the same age as Yin Yu.[1]

Personality[]

Jian Yu is a very direct person, always uttering his thoughts and opinions. He's usually rather hostile and insolent,[1] although he shows great respect for Yin Yu and only wants the best for him. He is also an exceedingly loyal person, always staying by Yin Yu's side even when he was losing status and popularity.[2][3]

He was prepared to take all the blame after the Brocade Immortal incident, showing that he would sacrifice a lot for the ones he cares about.[4]

History[]

Jian Yu was one of the disciples in the same sect as Yin Yu and was present on the day they met Quan Yizhen. From the beginning he disliked the child, eager to teach him a lesson for picking a fight with them, although Yin Yu shut down his aggression. At a later point during the sect life, he was also with the group of disciples that approached Yin Yu to complain about Quan Yizhen's behavior. He warns Yin Yu about the trouble shielding Quan Yizhen will cause for him in the future.[1]

He was appointed to the Middle Court by Yin Yu after the latter ascended to godhood, standing beside him on the day of their palace opening. Furthermore, he scolds Quan Yizhen for starting another fight with other Heavenly Officials and blames him for ruining the ceremony behind his back when he's alone with Yin Yu later. Yin Yu's compassion towards Quan Yizhen drives Jian Yu to have a small outburst of anger about Quan Yizhen and his demeanor before he ultimately leaves Yin Yu alone.[2]

At the Mid-Autumn Festival Banquet he and Yin Yu sat together at the edge of the feast. Jian Yu was relieved Quan Yizhen hadn't shown up, still insulting him although Quan Yizhen had ascended to the Upper Court by that point which put him at higher authority than Jian Yu. When a Heavenly Official mistook Yin Yu for Quan Yizhen since they shared the western territory, Jian Yu became incredibly frustrated for Yin Yu[2] but didn't tell him, so before they left the banquet together to head back to their palace.[3]

Jian Yu worried Quan Yizhen could completely ruin their status and take over the west, but Yin Yu didn't want to fight over their domain. Quan Yizhen suddenly showed up at the palace which angered Jian Yu, so he was sent back into the side chamber by Yin Yu. When the latter came into the chamber, he asked Jian Yu to help him find Quan Yizhen a birthday gift. Due to his resentment, Jian Yu secretly put the Brocade Immortal Robe into the gift box after Yin Yu had left the chamber, soon bringing it to him, so he could give it to Quan Yizhen.[3]

Yin Yu only noticed it three days later, immediately wanting to retrieve the dangerous robe. Jian Yu stopped him and tried to convince him that he shouldn't have to worry, but Yin Yu still left.[3] He chased after him but couldn't find the other, coming back to the destroyed palace and questioning who was responsible.[4]

Jian Yu soon realized the extent to which the Brocade Immortal incident had escalated, admitting to Jun Wu and everyone that he had been the one to secretly give Quan Yizhen the robe. He explained how he had always hated him and that Yin Yu beared no fault, being in shock after he heard Yin Yu told Quan Yizhen to die. Still, Jian Yu begged to be the one to take punishment instead of him, crying out of hatred and not wanting to accept how unjust the world was before both him and Yin Yu were banished from the Heavens.[4]

Jian Yu died during banishment. With the help of Hua Cheng, Yin Yu was able to pacify his soul and release his resentful spirit.[5]

Relationships[]

Yin Yu[]

He was one of Yin Yu's younger disciple brothers and most trusted companions. After Quan Yizhen joined their sect, Jian Yu frequently tried to warn him about the misfortune that he will bring to Yin Yu, although it was usually dismissed by the other.[1] During their time as Heavenly Officials, he stayed at Yin Yu's side even when he started to lose popularity and became incredibly frustrated for him due to having to witness Yin Yu getting overshadowed by Quan Yizhen.[2][3] Jian Yu becomes incredibly emotional after realizing Yin Yu might be banished, begging to be the one to suffer punishment which demonstrates how much he cared about Yin Yu.[4]

Quan Yizhen[]

Jian Yu was a fellow older disciple brother of Quan Yizhen whom he deeply despised. Even while they were still mortal, he was annoyed by Quan Yizhen's behavior and how much trouble he caused for the disciples, often calling him "mental" and a "brat".[1] His resentment only grew after they both got appointed to the Heavenly Court as he was still a burden and often caused embarrassing situations for Yin Yu.[2][3] He frequently insulted him behind his back, not caring about whether Quan Yizhen might be in danger or not.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Mortals need a fanaticism towards a passion like combat before they can achieve godhood. As he only taunted those who possessed such obsession and couldn't understand it, he's said not to have the potential to ascend.[1]
