Summary[]
The following day, Xie Lian leaves the city with his parents and Feng Xin to hide from the Yong’an soldiers. The King and Queen of Xianle now live in a secluded area to keep them safe.
Xie Lian and Feng Xin try to search for work, but the results are the same as the previous city and so they find none. The queen cooks for the both of them when they return from their search, the two thinking her cooking is bad in taste and form, thus they only pretend to eat it.
The queen asks where Mu Qing is, which Xie Lian replies to with a lie, saying that he’s on a mission and won’t be back for a while.
Then, Feng Xin points out that her hands look awful, bleeding and covered in scratches. The Queen of Xianle says it’s fine, it’s just the result of cleaning clothing. Frightened, Xie Lian was going to tell her to not do the labor, but then he remembers that there isn’t anyone who can do the work. Normally Mu Qing would clean the clothes, cook, keep count of the money pouch and also buy food for his parents, but he was no longer with them.
Xie Lian says he’ll do the housework from now on. His mother refuses and insists since she has free time and she enjoys watching both of them eat her cooking, causing Feng Xin and Xie Lian to feel guilty about throwing the meals away.
The Queen of Xianle accidentally reveals that her husband coughs blood and has been hiding it for quite a while. Consequently, Xie Lian gets furious with worry for not telling him sooner. They couldn’t see a doctor, in fear of being discovered, so he sells Hong Jing, even though Feng Xin told him not to. When they obtain money, they buy all sorts of medication since they didn't know the specific illness.
Along the way, Feng Xin and Xie Lian see a servant beating his master due to mistreatment. Feng Xin agrees with the crowd that the master deserves the beating, which inflicts great fear into Xie Lian.
That evening, Feng Xin stews medicines for the King of Xianle. Xie Lian gives him a gold belt after he realized he had never given Feng Xin anything to show gratitude. The belt is also partially a bribe since he deeply fears that Feng Xin would leave him as well. The latter asks about the reason for this act, but Xie Lian tells him to just take it and think of it as regular gold. Feng Xin accepts the gift after Xie Lian insists.
