Mortal Life[]
He Xuan was born into a family in the pit of poverty, commonly referred to as He Sheng in his mortal life. He had always been intelligent and talented, known everywhere as a good son. He studied hard and eventually took part in the national exam. Even though he had such a bright mind, he constantly failed the national exam because the examiners were offended that he didn't bring them any gifts and so they hid his test scrolls to exchange them for blank ones. For years he couldn't land a rank due to this.[1]
He later got engaged to his childhood friend who was beautiful and kind, but both his fiancée and little sister got kidnapped by a rich household to become concubines. His fiancée wouldn't obey and was beaten to death, while his sister couldn't bear it and took her own life. He Sheng went to the household to fight them but got jailed for two years and almost died of starvation instead.[1]
During the two years, his elderly mother died because there was no one to take care of her and his father had to work hard in his old age to support the family. He Sheng abandoned his dream to become a scholar and started a business to support his aging father, but he was such a good merchant that he made his competitors jealous. They gathered together and took everything he had and left him in a string of debts.[1]
One day before the last day of autumn, He Sheng took up weapons and butchered everyone who hurt him. These people have bullied the weaker citizens for a long time, and so they cheered him on. After killing everyone he succumbed to his injuries and died of exhaustion and blood loss.[1]
Following his death, his hometown began the tradition of the Bloody Fire Social to honor him and ask for his protection against villains. The Fire Social includes a procession with people dressed up as a victim of an incredibly violent murder and a play reenacting He Xuan's murder.[2]
In his moments of death Shi Wudu the god of wealth and Water master descended from the heavens and poked his corpse with a stick as if to make sure the man was dead. This made He Xuan curious enough to while on earth and find out the truth. Eventually he found out how and with whom his fate got switched. His jealousy of the living and hatred toward the water master himself made him become a water ghost.
Impersonation of Earth Master Yi[]
He spent 12 years inside Tonglu Mountain[3] devouring all kinds of ghosts before he finally broke out and became a ghost king. After becoming a Supreme, he send out many clones of himself disguised as junior officials and assistants to gather information on the heavens and ultimately kidnapped the new Earth Master, Ming Yi sometime between his calamity and ascension and began impersonating him. He befriends or was befriended by Shi Qingxuan, but as He Xuan consistently denies their friendship it's difficult to categorise. To not let anyone notice his true identity, he continued his duty as a Heavenly Official, managing to keep an excellent reputation and status.
Burning of the Heavenly Capital[]
Human Array[]
During the Human Array, He Xuan enters the array disguised as Hua Cheng. He lends Shi Qingxuan spiritual powers and also gives him the repaired Wind Master Fan.[4]
Puqi Shrine Feast[]
Near the end of the novel, whilst the beggars who helped with the human array feast away, it is discovered that 50 bowls of prepared food suddenly disappeared from the kitchen. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng deduce that He Xuan had come to celebrate as well and eaten all the chicken soups.[5]
