That IS my dad! My dad didn't use to be good to me, but then after he was really good to me. He's often given me meat to eat, even said he will take me to live in big, beautiful mansions...

Gu Zi (谷子, Gǔzi) is the son of the man whose body is possessed by Qi Rong.

Appearance[]

Gu Zi is a small child with big eyes that is said to not even look ten years old.[2]

Personality[]

He is an obedient and caring child who nags Qi Rong for eating humans.[3] Though being yelled at repeatedly, he still follows his father, who is being possessed by Qi Rong, around.

History[]

Nothing is known about his past, except that his biological father was extremely abusive towards him.

He first shows up when Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are in the Cannibal Lair of Qi Rong. Gu Zi gets picked out to be eaten by one of Qi Rong's underlings, causing his father to flee out of fear.[2]

After Qi Rong has possessed the body of his birth father later on, Gu Zi stays at his side. He takes care of him when Qi Rong is tied up at Puqi Shrine and tries to stop him from doing immoral things.

In the end Qi Rong sacrifices himself to save Gu Zi when the Heavenly Realm was destroyed by Jun Wu.[1] He's currently taken care of by Lang Qianqiu, waiting for his father's return.[4]

Relationships[]

Qi Rong[]

"This ancestor... has a son!"

He believes that Qi Rong is his real dad and protects him from others who want to kill him, although it is later revealed that Gu Zi knows that man is not his actual dad anymore. Gu Zi acts as Qi Rong's morality pet because he tells him off for doing immoral things like eating people[3] and spitting on the ground in the Heavenly Capital, to which Qi Rong actually listens.[5]

Qi Rong refers to him as his cheap son and does not treat him very well, but he is shown to hold genuine affection for Gu Zi. At first him referring to Gu Zi as a son was more of a joke or exploitation of his situation, but later on he truly announces that he is his son. It's also stated that despite his rather questionable treating of Gu Zi, Qi Rong was better and more caring than Gu Zi's actual birth father.[1]

Xie Lian[]

Gu Zi and Qi Rong was taken in by Xie Lian for a short while inside his Puqi shrine. He calls Xie Lian "Scrap collector gege" and helps out with the chores every now and then. No matter how many times Xie Lian tells Gu Zi that his father is possessed, the child did not believe him and stubbornly tries to protect his 'father'.

Lang Qianqiu[]

After the body Qi Rong was inhabiting is destroyed following the battle with Jun Wu, turning him into a green ghost flame, which is then captured by Lang Qianqiu, Gu Zi clutches onto Lang Qianqiu's leg and robes, crying and begging for his to release the tiny fading green ghost in his palms. Xie Lian tries telling Gu Zi that the ghost is not his actual father, but to no avail.[1] Afterwards, Gu Zi stays with Lang Qianqiu, constantly asking him where his father is. Lang Qianqiu collects the remnants of Qi Rong's soul and puts them in a lamp, which Gu Zi carries around, asking Lang Qianqiu how to make the soul grow.[4]
