Ghost Bridegroom[]
Together with Nan Feng, a deputy god of Nan Yang palace, Fu Yao decides to accompany Xie Lian on his mission to Yu Jun Mountain. They meet him in a teahouse where Fu Yao is first introduced as a deputy god of Xuan Zhen palace.[1] After hearing the rumors about the missing brides, they decide to spend the night in a Nan Yang temple. Fu Yao makes fun of the statue and Feng Xin's reputation as the God of Male Virility, even reciting a poem about it.[2] Following this, him and Nan Feng spiral into an argument and soon start to fight inside the temple.[3]
The next day they're are at the teahouse once again, thinking about what to do next.[3] They come up with the plan of disguising Xie Lian as a bride to lure the Ghost Bridegroom out and Fu Yao organizes the wedding robes, still being sickened when Xie Lian shows himself in the bride attire.[4] Fu Yao and Nan Feng escort the sedan, but they're soon held up as they face a pack of wolves and Base Slaves.[5]
Fu Yao later leaves to search the mountain for the Ghost Bridegroom, but ends up finding nothing.[6] When they reunite, he briefly explains who Qi Rong is after they discover the forest of hanging corpses and is shocked to find out that Xie Lian met Hua Cheng as well.[7] After the incident is over and the Ghost Bridegroom is captured, Fu Yao brings back some men from Xuan Zhen palace to help clean up the corpses from the forest.[8]
Banyue Kingdom[]
After Fu Yao and Nan Feng hear about Xie Lian leaving for Banyue Pass, they volunteer to accompany him once again. They visit Puqi Shrine and meet San Lang, who they immediately find suspicious and are prepared to fight against.[9] Once San Lang throws a broom towards Fu Yao, he snaps and destroys an altar table with spiritual energy. Xie Lian scolds him and Nan Feng and although annoyed, they stop their aggression.[10]
The four of them travel to the Gobi desert in which the Banyue kingdom is located. When they are resting in an abandoned house, Fu Yao and Nan Feng try to expose San Lang's true identity of Hua Cheng. Fu Yao offers San Lang his water bottle filled with Form Revealing Water, but San Lang refuses and asks Fu Yao to drink first in order to expose Fu Yao's true identity of Mu Qing. In the end, San Lang drinks the water but nothing happens. Fu Yao and Nan Feng try again with Hong Jing, but fail as well and thus remain suspicious of him.[11]
As they continue making their way through the desert, they get caught up in a sandstorm.[11] Xie Lian and San Lang are already flying through the air when Ruoye suddenly grabs onto Fu Yao and Nan Feng together and hauls them up as well. They manage to land however and seek shelter inside a cave where they meet a group of traveling merchants. Xie Lian and San Lang translate the story of General Hua which is written on his tombstone. The merchants think he was wrongfully demoted since he was protecting lives on both sides, but Fu Yao believes it was the natural consequences of his actions as it was his duty to kill the enemies.[12]
Suddenly Scorpion Snakes appear in the cave. Fu Yao and Nan Feng shoot balls of fire to keep the snakes at distance and the group escapes to the outside where the storm has long subsided. They discover a merchant has been bitten and that they can't connect to the spiritual communication array.[12] While Xie Lian, San Lang, A-Zhao and Nan Feng leave to find the antidote for the snake's poison, Fu Yao is tasked with protecting and keeping watch on the group of merchants.[13]
Sinner's Pit[]
After hours have passed and the others hadn't returned, Fu Yao decides to put up a protection circle for the merchants and follow after the others. He finds Xie Lian in the Sinner's Pit and proceeds to jump in there as well, being shocked to find out about Xie Lian's former identity of General Hua.[14] He assists in apprehending Ban Yue and Kemo, as well as fending off the sudden wave of Scorpion Snakes with fire attacks, although he gets bitten and exhausts himself in the process.[15]
Fu Yao doesn't trust Ban Yue as she betrayed her nation and compares her to Xuan Ji which leads Xie Lian to figure out that Pei Xiu is the perpetrator in the pit as well as behind the kidnappings in Banyue. After the situation is resolved and they make it out of the Sinner's Pit, Fu Yao is nowhere to be seen and Xie Lian wonders where he is. He notes that after A-Zhao revealed himself to be Pei Xiu, Fu Yao had went completely silent and assumes he must have run off on his own at one point.[16]
When Xie Lian later asks Mu Qing about Fu Yao's whereabouts at the Mid-Autumn Festival, Mu Qing explains that Fu Yao is in detention.[17]
Black Hearted Inn[]
Xie Lian meets Fu Yao once again at the Black Hearted Inn where Fu Yao tries to catch Jian Lan and the fetus spirit even though Xuan Zhen Palace is under suspension.[18] He manages to catch Cuo Cuo, although he gets apprehended and held down by Xie Lian. Xie Lian tries to negotiate with Fu Yao in order to investigate Mu Qing's involvement in the fetus spirit matter and work together with Fu Yao, but Fu Yao is too furious and dismisses any offers. Cuo Cuo remains captured by a talisman in his hand until he suddenly escapes and jumps onto a tree.[19]
After Feng Xin arrives at the scene, Fu Yao is shocked to learn that he is the father of the fetus spirit. He tries to explain to him that Mu Qing had nothing to do with the death of Cuo Cuo, but Feng Xin is too out of it to really respond and leaves. Xie Lian eventually releases Fu Yao from his grip and Fu Yao leaves as well in order to capture the fetus spirit once again.[20]
Tonglu Mountain[]
Fu Yao and Nan Feng both make their way to Tonglu Mountain in order to find the fetus spirit and Jian Lan. Xie Lian spots them fighting in the show while hiking up the Kiln with Hua Cheng. Their aggressive and loud brawl soon ends up causing an avalanche. Fu Yao and Nan Feng try to run from it, but Fu Yao quickly falls into a hole and is sunken in show up to his chest. Nan Feng wants to help him, but gets caught by the avalanche before being able to do anything. Xie Lian pulls them out of the snow with Ruoye, dragging them behind as he runs. He shortly turns back to save them, but all of them get swallowed by the avalanche.[21]
Fu Yao and Nan Feng end up trapped at the bottom of a deep pit inside a giant cave. They are both wrapped up into cocoons of thick silk, unable to climb out themselves. The two continue arguing until Xie Lian discovers them and goes down into the pit with them. While Xie Lian tries to find a way out of the silk, Fu Yao and Nan Feng spiral into an argument once again and shout at each other furiously. Due to their anger they forget to talk about their generals as seperate entities and begin addressing each other directly. They realize they screwed up and wait for Xie Lian's reaction, but it turns out Xie Lian had always known about their true identities.[22]
Fu Yao is taken aback that Xie Lian was able to figure it out so quickly and soon transforms back into his true form of Mu Qing.[23]
