The Crown Prince's Bodyguard[]
At the age of fourteen Feng Xin began his duty as Xie Lian's bodyguard.[1] Feng Xin was very loyal to Xie Lian and their relationship was close, so much so that Feng Xin considered the idea of them ever seperating as foolish.[2]
At one point Mu Qing got appointed to Xie Lian's personal assistant, which is likely when Feng Xin met him as well. He disliked Mu Qing from the beginning and they often got into quarrels that Xie Lian had to break up.
Deputy General[]
Mu Qing, along with Feng Xin, were appointed by Xie Lian as his deputy generals after his first ascension, thus they both became Heavenly Officials of the Lower Court.[1] They were responsible for filtering a portion of the prayers sent to Xie Lian.[3]
Fall of Xianle[]
As one of his deputy generals and closest companions, he was naturally present during the fall of the Xianle nation. Even during the civil war and crisis, Feng Xin still displayed incredible loyalty to Xie Lian and tried to make sure of his well being.
At one point, Feng Xin and Mu Qing became overwhelmed with the amount of prayers after the riots started to break out and the drought became even more severe,[4] but both continued to stay by Xie Lian's side and follow their duties.
Banishment[]
After defying Jun Wu and descending to the mortal realm in order to try and save the Xianle kingdom, Xie Lian was banished, Feng Xin and Mu Qing thus losing their status in the Heavens as well. With Xianle taken over by Yong'an, Xie Lian, his parents, Feng Xin and Mu Qing all had to flee to avoid being captured. They ended up living in a simple shack, desperately trying to find jobs.[5]
Although in a critical situation, Feng Xin rejected Mu Qing's idea of busking because he did not want to be a fool for the masses and considered Xie Lian of too much worth to go busk.[5]
One day, Feng Xin and Mu Qing got invited to eat the meal that the former Queen of Xianle had cooked. Although they tried to refuse at first, they eventually ended up eating, getting sick from it afterwards. They returned to the city and performed hard labour until sunset when they suddenly overheard people talking badly of the Crown Prince of Xianle. Feng Xin was incredibly angered by this, yet held back. Only when Xie Lian gets into a brawl with them does Feng Xin join in, too. In the end, the three of them got kicked out without getting paid.[5]
After this incident, Mu Qing left them. Feng Xin was appalled and angered by this, thinking Mu Qing only wanted to share the wealth, but not the suffering.[5]
Making Ends Meet[]
Since Mu Qing was gone, they had no one to take care of the king's and queen's daily necessities, so Feng Xin and Xie Lian had to do so from then on. The day they got invited by the queen to eat her cooking once more, they also found out that the king was very sick. To earn more money, Xie Lian planned to pawn Hong Jing, which troubled Feng Xin as it was the last sacred sword Xie Lian had.[6]
While in the city, both him and Xie Lian witness a servant beating up his master for mistreating him for years, Feng Xin agreeing with the crowd that the master is no good. Although he only said it off-handedly, Xie Lian became scared of Feng Xin leaving him, so he gave Feng Xin a golden belt as bribe.[6][7] Feng Xin refused it at first, but decided to keep it for the moment after Xie Lian insisted.[8]
After selling Hongjing, they finally had a good amount of money, but it didn't last for very long. With nothing left to pawn, Xie Lian and Feng Xin agree to try busking.[8]
On the day they make the decision, Feng Xin performs a show on the street where he displays his archery skills. The crowd is impressed and they earn a few coins, but a group of women comes out to confront Feng Xin. It turns out the arrow he shot at a banner had so much force that it landed in a brothel's yard and destroyed their screen. The women drag them to their establishment in order to use Xie Lian as a way of repayment, but the two ultimately manage to run away.[8]
Xie Lian and Feng Xin relocated after this incident, opening a shop for their busking. Their income was decent until one day, a group of men showed up at their door who accused Feng Xin and Xie Lian of robbing the other buskers in the area because of their popularity. Feng Xin intimidates them, so instead of picking a fight, they challenge the two to a duel of shattering stones on their chests.[8]
Since one of the men is so adamant in not giving up that he ended up risking his own life by taking on too many stone plates, Xie Lian voluntarily admits defeat and that they won't busk in this area anymore.[8]
Jian Lan[]
One of the women working in the brothel that Feng Xin accidentally damaged was Jian Lan, a former noble woman of Xianle.[9][10]
The two met shortly after Feng Xin started to busk and he soon began to show feelings for her.[8] Eventually, they fell in love with one another and had a relationship. At some point, Feng Xin gifted her the golden belt he got from Xie Lian[7] and he would sometimes spend his hard earned money to rent her for an entire night without doing anything sexual. He would simply talk with her all night, even though people took him for a joke for doing such a thing.[9]
Falling Apart[]
While Xie Lian had disappeared after getting drunk at the graveyard, the men that challenged them to a duel ambushed Feng Xin during one of his shows. They injured Feng Xin badly, but the wounds were tended to by Jian Lan afterwards.[11]
Two days after Xie Lian had gone missing, Feng Xin found him while Xie Lian was trying to stop Yong'an soldiers, still drunk. Feng Xin managed to get him away from the situation, Xie Lian presumably passing out shortly after. Feng Xin woke him up in a dark alleyway and tried to figure out what's going on with him, but Xie Lian was too scared to tell him.[11]
Shocked by the injuries he noticed on Feng Xin, Xie Lian told him to stop busking, but Feng Xin refused to give in. He continued to perform on the streets the following days and promised to look after the king and queen when Xie Lian told him he will leave for a while, although he felt slightly troubled accepting the responsibility now that he also had Jian Lan.[11]
Following the incident on the spiritual mountain, Mu Qing came to visit the cottage Xie Lian and the rest resided at. He found Feng Xin there at the moment and gifted them sacks of rice. Despite the initial reaction to Mu Qing leaving, Feng Xin accepted the aid and was even grateful for it.[12]
While him and Mu Qing were still talking, Xie Lian returned as well. The latter was taken aback upon seeing Mu Qing, immediately rejecting the rice. It's only after Feng Xin understood the gist of what had transpired on the mountain that he became enraged with Mu Qing. Together with Xie Lian, he drove Mu Qing away.[12] Despite chasing him away by flinging the sacks of rice at him, Feng Xin and Xie Lian still picked them up following the fight and used them as rations.[13]
This was also the first time Feng Xin came to know about Xie Lian robbing someone due to something Mu Qing said, although he did not fully believe it. Still, after Feng Xin found out, there was a silent change in their relationship and a small wedge between the two, but Feng Xin continued to try and take care of Xie Lian.[12]
When he came home one day, Xie Lian finally reported the return of Bai Wuxiang, which shocked Feng Xin. In this conversation he also asked Xie Lian if he still had some money, presumably to spend more time with Jian Lan, but there was none. Xie Lian was curious what he needed the money for, but Feng Xin insisted he was fine.[13]
The following days, Feng Xin witnessed Xie Lian seeing Bai Wuxiang everywhere. Feng Xin still believed him, but because only Xie Lian saw him, he did harbour doubts and secretly expressed concern to the king and queen about Xie Lian's mental wellbeing one night. Xie Lian overheard this conversation and became incredibly upset because he felt like he was being taken for a madman, prompting him to storm off. Feng Xin ran after him and wanted to accompany Xie Lian, but quickly got left behind.[13]
Seperation[]
During the period that Xie Lian was away, Jian Lan broke up with Feng Xin.[14] Their relationship has actually led to her pregnancy, but he was unaware of this fact.[7][9]
Two months passed before Feng Xin finally found Xie Lian again in the main streets, furious about his sudden disappearance. Feng Xin wanted to know what had happened, but all Xie Lian did was apologize. They went back home and Xie Lian presented Feng Xin a black sword to pawn, but because Jian Lan had already pushed him away, he no longer needed money.[14]
Both Xie Lian and Feng Xin went out to busk again. Since Feng Xin had now been performing for a long time, he had lost his competitive edge and was making about the same amount of money as everyone else, which was exceedingly less than in the beginning. After a few hours, Xie Lian went up to perform sword arts with a wooden stick, but one man in the crowd mocked the show and wanted to see it with an actual sword. Xie Lian aggressively assaulted this man, to the shock of Feng Xin. He tried to stop Xie Lian, but the latter brushed him off, so Feng Xin moved to check up on the man.[14]
Yong'an soldiers quickly showed up at the scene, so Feng Xin dragged Xie Lian away until they managed to get rid of them and return to the cottage. Feng Xin was enraged by what Xie Lian did, but his anger turned to shock when he heard Xie Lian explain his reasonings and that the man deserved to die. Xie Lian ultimately ignored Feng Xin and shut himself away in his room.[14]
Xie Lian ran off once more after the queen talked to him, so Feng Xin awaited his return at home. Eventually Xie Lian does come back with big sacks of valuable, but stolen goods. Feng Xin was aghast when he saw, devastated by what had become of the Xie Lian he once knew. He questioned why he had been following Xie Lian all this time if he had been like this, so Xie Lian told him to stop following before shutting himself away again.[14]
Feng Xin was stunned to hear that order, but after four hours, he does indeed bid farewell to Xie Lian's parents and leave once and for all.[14]
Martial God of the Southeast[]
After leaving, Feng Xin soon ascended on his own through his pure martial might.[15] Thus, Feng Xin became a Heavenly Official of the Upper Court and the martial god of the Southeast who possesses around eight thousand temples for his palace in the present.[1]
At one point, Feng Xin retrieved Hongjing that was pawned during banishment. He sharped and polished the sword, keeping it in his palace from then on.[16] He is known to generally spend a lot of his time in the mortal realm and rarely visit the Heavenly Capital.[1]
Brocade Immortal[]
During Yin Yu's time as a Heavenly Official, Feng Xin had already been deemed one of the top-ranking martial gods and was present during the Brocade Immortal incident regarding Quan Yizhen. Following Jun Wu's order, Feng Xin and the other martial gods moved to take both him and Yin Yu down.[17]
Xie Lian's Third Ascension[]
Feng Xin's golden palace collapses during Xie Lian's third ascension due to the powerful impact. He later comes barging into the spiritual communication array to confront the one who caused his palace to collapse, shocked when he hears Xie Lian's voice for the first time in eight-hundred years.[1]
Subordinate Nan Feng[]
- Main article: Nan Feng/History
Disguised as Nan Feng, a made up subordinate of his own palace, Feng Xin accompanies Xie Lian on his first two missions in the mortal realm together with Fu Yao, an alter ego of Mu Qing.
The first encounter Feng Xin has with Xie Lian in his true appearance is during the trial regarding the Banyue incident. He is one of the witnesses called forward by Pei Ming to examine the corpse of A-Zhao and testify if the wounds were caused by Hua Cheng's scimitar. When leaving the meeting, Feng Xin seemed to want to say something to Xie Lian, but he hurries away after Xie Lian smiles at him.[18]
State Preceptor Fang Xin[]
Feng Xin arrives at the Great Martial Hall after Xie Lian, Shi Qingxuan and Lang Qianqiu return from Ghost City, being concerned for Xie Lian's injuries. Stunned in shock after hearing the accusations of Lang Qianqiu, Feng Xin remainds silent for the rest of the meeting.[19]
Later, he visits Xie Lian at his palace, where Mu Qing is also present at that moment. They quickly get into an argument which turns into a messy fist fight. During their brawl, the doors of Xie Lian's palace suddenly swing open and silver butterflies swarm in, which causes them to aprubtly stop the fight.[20] They erect a magical shield together, barely able to hold the butterflies off. After Xie Lian gets taken away by Hua Cheng they want to follow after but can't open the door due to Hua Cheng's trick.
They begin to roll dice to solve the trick, however, since Feng Xin has rolled a four, they get teleported to his biggest fear - a women's bath. After Mu Qing rolls the dice, they have to face Black Marsh Crocodiles, losing the dice in the mess.[21]
Cannibal Lair[]
Mu Qing heads back to the Heavenly Capital, but Feng Xin keeps pursuing Xie Lian and Hua Cheng together with Shi Qingxuan. They eventually find the two in Qi Rong's lair, the two being on high alert after they see Hua Cheng. Feng Xin immediately pulls back his longbow and aims at him.[22] Although Shi Qingxuan quickly picks up that Hua Cheng had no bad intentions, Feng Xin refuses to lower his weapon.[23]
In order to get him to stop, Shi Qingxuan pushes his bosom into Feng Xin's arm, which terrifies the latter so much that he backs away a far distance, cursing Shi Qingxuan to never do that again. Feng Xin is then quite shocked to hear from Xie Lian that the Green Ghost Qi Rong is actually his little cousin that they knew in the past.[23]
He wants to take care of the remaining ghosts in the lair, but before he leaves, Hua Cheng summons a wave of blood rain. While him, Xie Lian and Shi Qingxuan are protected, Feng Xin gets completely drenched in blood from head to toe.[23] He returns to the Heavenly Capital along with Xie Lian and Shi Qingxuan afterwards, entering the Great Martial Hall to give report. Upon seeing Feng Xin covered in blood, the gods avoid him, except for Mu Qing who continues to stare at Feng Xin.[24]
