Summary[]

Xie Lian and the young man continue talking. He marvels at the name "Crimson Rain Sought Flower", so the youngster explains how Hua Cheng gained this title. Xie Lian continues his questions by asking about Hua Cheng's appearance and comes to know that Hua Cheng gouged out his right eye.

He also reveals that a ghost's weakness is his ashes. The two exchange names with the youngster introducing himself as San Lang. They share a steamed bun when suddenly the ox refuses to walk further. A clan of hooded ghosts approach from the distance, so Xie Lian quickly puts up a barrier with Ruoye that turns them invisible.

It turns out it's the night of the Ghost Festival. Since the ox cart driver is too scared to stay quiet, Xie Lian knocks him out. The ghosts are confused as to why their path is blocked but they move on shortly after. Xie Lian drives the cart away when San Lang notices the bandage around Xie Lan's neck. Right as Xie Lan begins to explain, the ghosts notice their presence and start chasing them down.

Xie Lian begins using a fortune shaker to determine their path, but keeps throwing down "bad luck" sticks regardless of direction. When San Lang tries, they finally get "good luck" sticks and randomly choose a path, only to end up being confronted by the ghosts. Xie Lian tries to have a civil conversation but to no avail. When San Lang shoots them a glare however, the ghosts quickly retreat.

As they continue their way to Puqi Village, Xie Lian offers to read San Lang's palm to investigate whether or not he's a ghost, but he doesn't find any major clues. They arrive at Puqi Shrine and San Lang is about to take his leave when Xie Lian asks if he'd like to stay the night. He agrees and Xie Lian quickly wakes up the ox cart driver before heading inside.

While Xie Lian is preparing a straw mattress that was to be their shared bed, San Lang mentions that the temple is missing a painting of the god and offers to paint one the following day. Hearing this, Xie Lian is happy that he knows of the Crown Prince of Xianle. San Lang once again stares at his bandaged neck and ankle which flusters Xie Lian. They go to sleep, San Lang looking visibly troubled.

The next morning, Xie Lian notices a painting of the Crown Prince hanging above the altar. He finds San Lang cleaning outside and praises him for the artwork. He offers to do San Lang's hair and while combing, checks for any flaws to determine if he's a ghost once more. They spend the day repairing and cleaning the temple until the ox cart driver shows up with a couple of villagers. He recounts to the villagers how Xie Lian saved him the previous night and they start to pray in front of the shrine. Suddenly, another group of villagers bring in an old man in horrendous condition, asking for help.
