The Cave of Ten Thousand Gods (万神窟, Wàn Shén Kū) is a location in Tonglu Mountain. It contains the statues and murals of Xie Lian that Hua Cheng created during his years in the mountain.
History[]
The cave is very complex; instead of just one path, it has many smaller corridors leading to other caves with different statues - short, tall, boyish, youthful, standing, sitting, dancing, fighting, all clothed in different robes. They looked as if they weren't all sculpted by the same person, since the level of skill was dramatically different; some were rough and unrefined, while others were otherworldly.[1]
Hua Cheng was embarrassed by these statues and did not want Xie Lian to know that they were all of him. He covered their faces, saying they were probably statues of the Crown Prince of Wuyong and pretended that he didn't know where they were.[1] When Mu Qing ripped the veils of a few statues Xie Lian realized, that this wasn't really the Cave of Ten Thousand Gods, but of only one - himself.
Later they discovered the murals made of thick lines, colors and little figures. Each section was made differently; some were coarse and wild, others elegant, exquisite or peculiar. By some paintings Hua Cheng left unreadable notes. The murals showed scenes from Hua Cheng's memory - his childhood, being saved by Xie Lian during the Heavenly Ceremonial Procession, from the battlefield[2] and even one that contains sexual imagery.[3]
In an extra, it's revealed that Hua Cheng made statues of Xie Lian at different stages in his life. Mentioned in this chapter were statues of Xie Lian when he was drunk, playing on a swing and poisoned by the Land of the Tender fragrance which is aphrodisiac. When Xie Lian visits the Cave of Ten Thousand Gods after regaining his powers, he accidentally makes the statues come to life, including the statue of himself that was poisoned by the Land of Tender Fragrance. Hua Cheng makes a statue of himself to accompany this statue of Xie Lian. Xie Lian suggests making a statue of Hua Cheng for every Xie Lian and Hua Cheng agrees. He assures Xie Lian that the statues won't get mixed up because each Hua Cheng would only be their own Xie Lian's most faithful follower.[4]
