Summary[]
After making sure Feng Xin stays with his father and mother, Xie Lian goes outside and walks tens of miles to search for a new way to obtain income.
Finally, he stops walking when he’s deep in the deserted mountain. To conceal his identity, he covers his face with white silk and hides.
To afford food and medication, he plans on stealing from someone who shows up in the path. Normally he would never go against his morals, but he convinces himself that this is an exception. He nervously waits for many hours, but every time a person came down the path, Xie Lian would make excuses and not do it.
When a middle aged man comes down the road, Xie Lian’s stomach grumbles which makes him snap out of the hesitation and go to the mortal. He orders him to hand over his belongings, causing the middle aged man to run away deep into the forest and yell for help. Xie Lian worries that others might hear the commotion, so he goes after him.
The human falls down, but Xie Lian stops in his tracks because he notices other people in the forest. He looks closely and finds out they are Heavenly Officials. The middle aged man sees the robber isn’t moving, so he takes this chance to run as far away as possible.
The gods look at him and Xie Lian is stiff with fear. They recognize him and ask why he is dressed like a robber, much to Xie Lian's distress. The gods figure out what is going on and promise they won’t tell anyone about the incident.
As Xie Lian goes down of the mountain, the cold breeze snaps him out of the daze and reminds him of what horrible deed he almost committed. He’s filled with regrets. When he feels something near him, he quickly leaves the place.
Feng Xin waited for him for half a day, so when Xie Lian returns, he asks how much he earned. He doesn’t reveal anything and says he won’t busk tomorrow so he can train. Feng Xin agrees, he doesn’t know that Xie Lian wants to stay inside due to fear of being recognized by the middle aged man as the robber.
From the following days, Xie Lian doesn't cultivate because he doesn’t want to ascend and see those Heavenly Officials again. He thinks about his parents who would be disappointed by his disgraceful behavior and unable to take these thoughts, he charges outside and runs tens of miles. He wants to be alone with himself, but it's hard to breathe when he thinks about the future.
Finally, he stops at the graveyard. Xie Lian’s whole body is frostbitten. He notices a tombstone with two jars of wine on it, so he takes a mouthful of it to warm his body. It does the trick, and he chugs down more.
A ghost fire notices him and circles around Xie Lian to show concern. He went through him many times, attempting to touch Xie Lian. After finishing the jar, he gets up groggily. The ghost looks funny to him, so he laughs and asks what he is doing.
The tiny flame froze after hearing his words.
