Do you know what the consequences are for calling him an idiot to his face?
— Ling Wen about Bai Jing

Bai Jing (白錦, Bái Jǐn) was a general of the kingdom of Xuli before turning into the Brocade Immortal.[1] He was and still is close with Ling Wen.[2]

Appearance[]

Bai Jing was a young, tall man with disheveled hair.[3] His bone structure was able to indicate that he was someone skilled in the martial arts and although his exact height is unknown, Xie Lian could tell that he was about 5 cm taller than him.[4]

Personality[]

Bai Jing was a very foolish and dumb man, not high of intellect. However, he was extremely skilled in martial arts and a talented warrior. He was said to be very brave and despite being rather dense, a kind person.[5]

Ling Wen describes him to be similar to Hua Cheng due to Bai Jing's love, devotion and willingness to die for her.[2]

History[]

Bai Jing was born in the kingdom of Xuli. He became a very successful warrior and general, playing a major part in claiming victories for his country. Due to his foolish ways and the fact that he had no family, the money he made as a general was quickly taken by others, leaving Bai Jing broke. Thus, no woman had interest in him, but this didn't bother him and his martial skills were so extraordinary that he was even supposed to ascend to the Heavens in a few years.

According to the legend of the Brocade Immortal, one day he fell deeply in love with a girl who turns out to be Ling Wen. On his birthday, she apparently gifted him a robe. It was said to be very ugly and extremely poorly made, but because he loved her, and it was the first present he had ever gotten from a woman, he was very happy about it and gladly tried it on. Upon wearing it, he wondered why it was sleeveless. She explained that she wasn't good at sewing, but that it shouldn't be a problem if he didn't have arms. Blinded by love, he cut off his own arms for her. He continued to wonder why he couldn't stretch out his legs, and she told him again that it wouldn't be an issue if he didn't have them, thus he asked her to chop them off. Next he wondered why he couldn't poke his head out, her giving the same response as before. He then asked her to decapitate him.

Soaked in his blood, the robe was forged into a powerful and malicious spiritual device by Ling Wen, and he became the Brocade Immortal.[5] It's hinted that she did all this to make the kingdom fall faster in order for Jing Wen to lose power,[1] although the entire legend is only a folk tale and the truth remains unknown.

Relationships[]

Ling Wen[]

Bai Jing and her are close friends. Bai Jing was, and presumably still is, deeply in love with Ling Wen, who was the first woman to ever show him affection and gift him a present. This devotion went to the point that Bai Jing is implied to have willingly died for her and leave her his ashes in the form of the Brocade Immortal as an object of defense.[2] While in the form of that robe, he protects her and is very sensitive about rumors of Ling Wen having a lover.

Pei Ming[]

Bai Jing despises Pei Ming, mostly because he's rumored to be Ling Wen's lover. After getting to know that fact, he tries to actively kill Pei Ming, even though Ling Wen tells him to stop and that the rumor is not true.[1]

Hua Cheng[]

Since Hua Cheng holds a similar deep affection and devotion for a particular someone like Bai Jing himself, willing to do everything that person said, he felt completely aligned with Hua Cheng when the latter wore the Brocade Immortal.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The name Bai Jing was given to him by Ling Wen since he was formely called Xiao Bai, a term to call someone idiotic.[6]
    • He likes being called by that name.[6]
